Manas National Park is situated across Baksa, Chirang, Barpeta, and Kokrajhar districts in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of western Assam, along the foothills of the Bhutan Himalayas, approximately 135 km northwest of Guwahati.
The park is open annually from November 1 to April 30. November to February offers pleasant winter weather (10°C–24°C) and clear waters for river rafting, while March and April offer the highest tiger, rhino, and Pygmy Hog sighting probabilities following controlled grass burning.
No. Assam does not require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian citizens or foreign nationals. Visitors only require standard Forest Department entry passes and mandatory guide allocations arranged at Bansbari or Barpeta Road Range Offices.
Manas is the world's prime refuge for the critically endangered Pygmy Hog (the world's smallest wild pig) and Gee's Golden Langur. It also shelters thriving populations of the Royal Bengal Tiger, Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, Asian Elephant, Wild Water Buffalo, and Bengal Florican.
Manas shares its northern international border with Bhutan's Royal Manas National Park, forming the contiguous Transboundary Manas Conservation Area (TraMCA) of over 1,500 square kilometers, allowing unrestricted gene flow for tigers, elephants, and hornbills.
Visitors can choose from morning and afternoon 4x4 open-top Jeep safaris (in Bansbari, Bhuyanpara, and Panbari ranges), early morning 1-hour elephant safaris in Bansbari grasslands, and gentle 35 km river rafting expeditions from Mathanguri down to Bansbari.
Manas is a 3.5 to 4-hour drive (135 km) from Guwahati Airport via the 4-lane NH27 highway through Barpeta Road. Barpeta Road Railway Station (BPRD) is the nearest railhead, located 22 km (35 minutes) from Bansbari Gate.
No. There are no ATMs inside the park or at Bansbari Gate. Travelers must withdraw physical cash in Guwahati or at Barpeta Road town (22 km away) for safari permits, guide fees, and local purchases.
