Birder & Photographer Field Notes
Recommended Optics & Lenses
Use 400mm to 600mm telephoto lenses. Because canopy lighting can be dappled, prime f/4 lenses or fast zooms perform best. 8x42 or 10x42 ED binoculars are essential for tracking canopy movement.
Optimal Lighting Hours
The golden light window is 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM, when morning sun first filters across the eastern Karbi hill ridge, illuminating foraging hornbills and flycatchers.
Acoustic Call Identification
Listen for the loud, whooshing wing beats of Great Hornbills in flight and the high-pitched morning calls of Western Hoolock Gibbons echoing through the valley.
Field Etiquette & Dress Code
Wear muted forest tones (khaki, olive green, brown). Avoid bright neon colors or strong perfumes. Maintain absolute silence during stops to avoid alerting sensitive raptors.
The 15-Year Reopening Story
Following a 15-year closure since 2009, Panbari Reserve Forest was officially inaugurated for regulated jeep safaris on February 3, 2025 by Field Director Dr. Sonali Ghosh and Bokakhat Ranger Manjit Sonowal.
