  • Guwahati to Bhalukpong Foothills Drive

    Transfer

Meet your private mountain driver at Guwahati Airport (GAU) or Railway Station. Leave the Brahmaputra plains behind, drive through lush tea estates of Balipara, and cross the border into Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong where our team verifies your Inner Line Permits.

  • Tipi Orchid Research Centre

    Sightseeing

Stop at the Tipi Orchid Research Centre on the banks of the Kameng River. Housing over 500 species of rare indigenous Himalayan orchids, walk through the greenhouse to witness exotic blooming epiphytes.

  • Nechiphu Gorge & Dirang Valley Check-in

    Transfer

Ascend the winding BCT highway through Nechiphu gorge into the peaceful Dirang Valley (1,560 m). Check in to your riverfront lodge. The mild valley climate ensures a restful night and essential initial acclimatization.

Dirang  —  Tawang

Climb past the alpine tree-line to Sela Pass and the world's longest high-altitude twin-lane Sela Tunnel, witness the roaring Nuranang Waterfalls, and reach Tawang town.

  • Ascend switchbacks as vegetation shifts to alpine rhododendron and snowfields. Cross the majestic Sela Pass (4,170 m) and gaze upon the sacred turquoise waters of Sela Lake. Experience transit through the newly operational twin-tube Sela Tunnel.

  • Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls)

    Sightseeing

Descend towards Jang to marvel at Nuranang Falls, a spectacular 100-meter sheer curtain of glacial water crashing into the Tawang Chu river, named after the brave Monpa girl Nura.

  • Tawang Town Arrival & Acclimatization

    Transfer

Drive the final scenic stretch into Tawang (3,048 m / 10,000 ft). Check into your heated accommodation, hydrate with warm herbal tea, and rest to adjust to the elevation.

Tawang  —  Tawang

Explore the 17th-century Tawang Grand Monastery, the 6th Dalai Lama's birthplace at Urgelling, Gyangong Ani Gompa, and the evening War Memorial Light & Sound Show.

  • Tawang Grand Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse)

    Sightseeing

Tour the largest monastery in India and 2nd largest in the world, founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso. Visit the 3-story Dukhang (assembly hall), the library of sacred scriptures, and the 28-foot gilded Buddha statue.

  • Visit the peaceful 14th-century Urgelling Monastery, sacred birthplace of Tsangyang Gyatso (the 6th Dalai Lama). Then ascend to Gyangong Ani Gompa, a serene hilltop nunnery housing over 50 Buddhist nuns.

  • Pay tribute to the 2,420 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Attend the stirring evening Light and Sound Show that narrates the heroic border defense history.

Tawang  —  Tawang

Board a specialized local 4x4 SUV for an unforgettable high-altitude border journey to Bum La Pass on the Indo-China LAC, Nagula Lake, Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake, and PT Tso.

  • Nagula Lake & Bum La Pass (15,200 ft / 4,633 m)

Climb via Y-Junction past the stark glacial waters of Nagula Lake (4,100 m) to the Indo-China frontier at Bum La Pass. Stand at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), visit the Rock of Peace, and interact with the Indian Army jawans on the high border.

  • Sangetsar Tso (Madhuri Lake)

    Sightseeing

Traverse alpine tundra to Sangetsar Tso (3,700 m / 12,140 ft), famously known as Madhuri Lake. Formed by a massive earthquake in 1950, marvel at the dead pine tree trunks rising eerily from the crystal clear glacial water, and enjoy hot army snacks by the lake.

  • On the return descent to Tawang, pause at Panga Teng Tso (3,910 m / 12,828 ft). Admire the sacred high-altitude lake surrounded by alpine turf, rhododendron slopes, and colorful Buddhist prayer flags snapping in the mountain wind.

Descend through the Sela range to pay solemn tribute at Jaswant Garh War Memorial, explore 17th-century Dirang Dzong stone fortress, and reach the monastery ridge of Bomdila.

  • Stop at the poignant Jaswant Garh War Memorial. Having witnessed the brutal high-altitude terrain at Bum La, feel the profound weight of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat's 72-hour solo stand in 1962. Walk through his preserved bunker and savor hot army tea.

  • Dirang Dzong & Kiwi Orchard Walk

    Sightseeing

Re-cross Sela Tunnel and descend into Dirang to explore Dirang Dzong, a 17th-century fortified stone Monpa settlement. Walk along the riverbank past local kiwi and apple orchards.

  • Outer Shell: 1 windproof, waterproof heavy down jacket (rated to -5°C for winter/high passes) and a lightweight rain shell.
  • Sturdy Footwear: Broken-in walking shoes or hiking boots with deep rubber lugs for wet monastery steps and rocky lake shores.
  • Woolen Socks: 3-4 pairs of thick woolen socks.
  • Accessories: 1 insulated fleece beanie/cap, 1 pair of windproof thermal gloves, and a neck warmer/buff.
  • UV Protection: UV400 polarized sunglasses (essential to prevent snow blindness at Sela Pass & Bum La) and broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Indian citizens need two permits: (1) An Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, and (2) A Bum La Pass Special Army Permit issued via the DC Office Tawang with Army Brigade approval (or the official online portal `bumlapass.in`). Nezo arranges and files both permits end-to-end for all our guests.
We use a medically sound, staggered ascent strategy. Instead of rushing directly to 10,000 ft from Guwahati, you halt on Day 1 in Dirang (1,560 m) for intermediate acclimatization. Day 3 is dedicated to local Tawang sightseeing (3,048 m) to stabilize blood oxygen levels before you ascend to Bum La Pass (4,633 m / 15,200 ft) on Day 4.
Inaugurated by the Border Roads Organisation at 13,000 ft, the twin-lane Sela Tunnel bypasses the hazardous, snow-blocked crest of Sela Pass (13,700 ft). It shaves 60–90 minutes off the drive between Dirang and Tawang and guarantees year-round, all-weather connectivity even during heavy winter snowfall.
No. Under local Tawang District Administration and taxi syndicate rules, commercial cabs from outside Arunachal Pradesh are not permitted on the high-altitude Bum La circuit due to defense regulations, extreme terrain, and black ice. All tourists must switch to a local Arunachal-registered 4x4 SUV (Tata Sumo/Scorpio), which is fully arranged and included in our package.
Visiting Jaswant Garh on Day 5 during the descent from Tawang creates a far deeper, more emotional connection. Having personally experienced the stark, isolated frontier at Bum La and the brutal Himalayan passes, you truly understand the scale of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat's 72-hour solo stand during the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
March to May (Spring): Blooming rhododendrons, pleasant valley weather (10°C–20°C), and crystal-clear mountain views.
October to November (Autumn): Best visibility, golden autumn foliage, and the colorful Tawang Festival.
December to February (Winter): Snow-covered Sela Pass, frozen alpine lakes, sub-zero temperatures (-5°C to -12°C), perfect for snow enthusiasts.
Foreign nationals can visit Tawang, Dirang, and Bomdila by obtaining a Protected Area Permit (PAP) (minimum 2 travelers). However, due to Ministry of Defence border restrictions, foreign nationals are not permitted to visit the frontier zone of Bum La Pass. For foreign guests, Day 4 is substituted with an excursion to Zemithang Valley (Gorsam Chorten) or the ancient Chagzam Iron Bridge.
