The Vibe & Architecture
The architecture is a blend of rustic highland retreat and modern luxury, featuring high glass walls, native stone terraces, and buildings constructed using Canadian spruce log wood. Walkways weave through manicured gardens lined with local orchids, leading to private cottages, wooden cabins, and pool villas spread across the cliff edge. The property is designed to showcase Sohra's dramatic weather, with mist frequently rolling directly across the open pool decks, outdoor lounges, and the glass-enclosed dining spaces.
Location & Proximity to Sohra Landmarks
Situated on the edge of the Mawblang plateau near Mawsmai, the resort serves as an ideal base for exploring the wet, canyon-cut landscape of Cherrapunji:
- Nohsngithiang (Seven Sisters) Falls: Directly borders the property, offering panoramic views from the resort's public spaces and clifftop rooms.
- Mawsmai Cave: 1.5 kilometers (a 3-minute drive).
- Arwah Cave: 7 kilometers (a 15-minute drive).
- Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek Start (Tyrna): 14 kilometers (a 30-minute drive).
- Nohkalikai Falls: 12 kilometers (a 25-minute drive).
- Garden of Caves: 11 kilometers (a 20-minute drive).
- Shillong City Center: 54 kilometers (a 2-hour drive via NH-106).
- Guwahati Airport (GAU): 170 kilometers (a 4.5-hour drive).
Dining at Sohra House & Sky Grill
The resort features two distinct signature dining outlets highlighting local and global menus:
- Sohra House: A bistro-style fine-dining restaurant featuring floor-to-ceiling glass panels overlooking the canyon. The menu highlights traditional Khasi specialties like slow-smoked pork with local spices and Jadoh rice, alongside standard North Indian, Asian, and continental selections.
- Sky Grill: An open-air clifftop dining pavilion featuring live music in the evenings, serving tandoori grills, finger foods, and signature cocktails under the highland stars.
- Floating Breakfast: A luxury in-pool tray service available by request for guests staying in pool-equipped suites and villas.
Activities & Highland Experiences
The resort features a cliff-edge infinity pool, a wellness spa offering deep-tissue therapy using local botanical oils, and evening bonfires at the Sky Grill. The in-house travel desk assists in organizing treks to the local living root bridges, coordination of local guides, and arrangements for regional sightseeing.
Sustainability & Community Impact
The resort actively supports the local community by employing over 65% of its workforce from the surrounding Nongthymmai and Mawblang villages. Solar water-heating panels are installed across the main block to reduce electricity consumption, and rainwater harvesting tanks utilize Sohra's heavy rainfall for property maintenance.
Getting There & Mountain Road Access
The property is easily accessible via the well-maintained Shillong-Cherrapunji Highway (NH-106). Secure, complimentary private parking is available on-site for guest cars and tempo travelers.
The Honest Guide: What to Expect
To ensure guest expectations are set transparently, please note the following details before booking:
- Extreme Weather Exposure: Perched directly on a clifftop in Sohra, the resort experiences heavy rainfall and dense fog, particularly from May to September. Views of the Seven Sisters Falls and valley can be completely obscured by mist for days at a time.
- Wi-Fi and Cell Signal Fluctuations: Standard Wi-Fi is available, but due to Cherrapunji's frequent storms and remote terrain, bandwidth can be unstable. Cellular signals (primarily Jio and Airtel) are strong near the lobby but can drop inside the lower clifftop cabins.
- Steep Terrain and Steps: The resort layout slopes down toward the cliff edge. Reaching the lower cottages, log huts, and pool villas requires navigating steep stone pathways and steps, which may be challenging for guests with severe mobility issues or elderly travelers.
- Power Backup Transitions: Power outages are common in rural Meghalaya. High-capacity generators provide lighting and power for TVs, chargers, and Wi-Fi. However, there is a 15 to 30-second lag during transitions, and heavy-draw appliances like room heaters, Jacuzzis, or private pools do not run on generator backup.
- Highland Wildlife: Surrounded by dense tropical greenery, expect insects, moths, and occasional frogs on outdoor decks and balconies, especially after dark in the rainy season.
