Arrival & Transit Logistics: Starting from Guwahati

Your journey starts at Guwahati. Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport (GAU). We will pick you up directly from the airport/railway station and handle all road transfers from there.

Your Packing Guide for This Journey

  • Daypack: A 20-30L water-resistant daypack is essential for day excursions and treks.
  • Flashlight/Headlamp: Crucial for exploring the dark limestone pathways inside Mawsmai and Arwah caves.
  • Water Bottle: A vacuum-insulated reusable flask to keep water cold/warm throughout long hill drives.
  • Insect Repellent: Standard DEET-based repellent to ward off bugs in forest walks and valley floors.
  • Power Bank: 10000mAh+ capacity is recommended, as cold mountain air drains phone batteries faster.
  • Cash: Keep sufficient physical currency since network connectivity in Dawki/Mawlynnong is spotty, often causing digital payments/UPI to fail.
  • Highland Layers: Temperatures in Shillong and Cherrapunji can drop sharply, especially in the evenings (10-15°C). Bring a warm fleece, sweater, or light down jacket.
  • Breathable Activewear: Lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirts and trekking pants are perfect for the humid valleys and the climb down/up Nongriat.
  • Modest Attire: Pack clothing that covers shoulders and knees for visiting the sacred forest areas and local villages.
  • Trekking Shoes: Broken-in hiking shoes or trail runners with clean rubber lugs. The 3,000+ concrete and stone steps down to the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat can be steep, wet, and highly slippery.
  • Slip-on Shoes/Sandals: Easy slip-ons or flat sandals are highly convenient for river wading in Dawki and for quick removal at local homes and sacred sites.
  • High-Altitude UV Protection: Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, and Category 3 polarized sunglasses. The sun on open plateaus (like Eco Park and Laitlum Canyons) is intense.
  • Hat/Cap: Wide-brimmed hat or cap for shade.
  • Rain Gear: A high-quality windproof rain jacket, poncho, or compact umbrella is essential year-round. Sohra is one of the wettest zones on Earth, and passing showers are common.
  • Dry Bags: Waterproof pouches to protect your phone, camera, and cash from spray near cascades like Nohkalikai and during boating at Dawki.
  • ID Copies: Physical photocopies of your Aadhaar card, passport, or other government-issued ID.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Basic first-aid kit, band-aids (blister prevention is key for treks), anti-motion sickness pills for winding mountain roads, and personal medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Meghalaya. You only need a valid government photo ID (such as Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or Passport). Foreign nationals must carry a valid Indian visa and passport, and complete standard registration upon entry.
The trek to the Nongriat Double Decker Living Root Bridge involves descending and climbing approximately 3,500 steep concrete and stone steps each way (around 6,000–7,000 steps total). It requires good physical fitness, sturdy footwear, and takes 4 to 6 hours round-trip. For seniors, travelers with knee or heart concerns, or families with toddlers, we recommend visiting the Single Decker Living Root Bridge at Riwai village near Mawlynnong instead, which requires only an easy 10-to-15 minute walk along a gentle, paved village path.
The Umngot River in Dawki exhibits its legendary glass-like transparency from late October through April, when the dry winter climate eliminates sediment runoff and country wooden boats appear to float on thin air. During peak monsoon months (June to September), heavy runoff makes the water murky and swells river currents, temporarily suspending boating and watersports for safety.
In Meghalaya, Sunday is traditionally observed as a day of church attendance and quiet family rest. In Shillong, major commercial markets like Police Bazaar and Iewduh (Bara Bazaar) and government-run museums like Don Bosco Museum remain closed on Sundays. However, natural viewpoints, waterfalls, and private hotel dining remain open. We sequence the itinerary so that your Sunday is spent enjoying outdoor landscapes like Cherrapunji canyons or Dawki river rather than urban shopping hubs.
For Day 1, we strongly recommend booking a flight landing at Guwahati Airport (GAU) before 11:30 AM (no later than 12:00 PM). This allows for a relaxed 4.5-to-5 hour scenic hill drive to Cherrapunji, including lunch and sightseeing stops at Umiam Lake and Mawkdok Dympep Valley before sunset. For Day 7 departure, please book a flight departing Guwahati after 4:30 PM (ideally 5:00 PM onwards) to allow for the 3.5-to-4 hour transfer from Shillong and mandatory airport check-in.
All transfers and excursions are operated in private, tourist-licensed vehicles from our active fleet with seasoned hill chauffeurs. For solo travelers, couples, or small families (up to 4-5 guests), we deploy the Toyota Innova Crysta (premium SUV) or Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (comfortable MUV). For larger groups of 6 to 14 guests, we provide our spacious Force Tempo Traveller 17-Seater or luxury Force Urbania 17-Seater with high headroom and individual AC vents. We never combine separate bookings in shared cabs.
We offer three carefully curated stay categories: (1) Classic Comfort features vetted 2–3★ boutique homestays and hotels such as La Kupar Inn in Cherrapunji and Fairlawns in Shillong; (2) Curated Deluxe includes premium 3–4★ properties like Sa-I-Mika Resort in Cherrapunji and The Golf Retreat in Shillong; (3) Signature Luxury provides premier suites with valley views at Polo Orchid Resort in Cherrapunji and the heritage Tripura Castle in Shillong.
While 4G/5G mobile signals and UPI payments (Google Pay, PhonePe) work smoothly in Shillong and central Cherrapunji, cellular coverage is spotty or unavailable down in deep gorges, along the Nongriat trail, and near the Dawki border. Local boatmen, roadside fruit vendors, and attraction ticket counters often accept cash only. We recommend withdrawing ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 in cash at Guwahati or Shillong before heading into rural valleys.
Yes. All our itineraries are fully bespoke. We can easily extend your tour with 2 nights in Kaziranga National Park for jeep and elephant safaris to see the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, add Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, or include an overnight halt in Jowai for Krang Shuri Falls. Contact our travel specialists to modify the pace or route to your travel dates.
Yes. Although indigenous Khasi cuisine features local meats, all our partner hotels, resorts, and vetted wayside restaurants in Shillong and Cherrapunji provide clean, separate vegetarian dining options serving North Indian, South Indian, and continental fare. Pure vegetarian and Jain meals (prepared without onion and garlic) can also be arranged with advance notice.
