Wah Kaba Falls
"A seasonal cascade plunging into a deep subtropical gorge."
Wah Kaba Falls is a seasonal waterfall located along the Shillong-Sohra highway in East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, at 1,400 meters above sea level. Perched just 5 kilometers before Sohra town, this waterfall plunges approximately 170 meters down a vertical sandstone cliff into a deep canyon.
The Legend of the Water Spirits
Local Khasi folklore states that the deep pool at the base of the waterfall is home to two benevolent water fairies (Puri). Traditional woodcutters and travelers have passed down stories of seeing these spirits in the early morning mist. Khasi elders historically treated the surrounding caves as sacred spaces.
Seasonal Flow and Rain Cycles
Fed by a local mountain stream on the plateau, the waterfall is highly rain-dependent. During the peak monsoon (June to September), it transforms into a roaring torrent that sprays mist across the entire path. In contrast, during the dry winter (November to February), the stream dries up, leaving only a dark streak on the sandstone cliff.
Trail and Viewpoints
A paved concrete path with safety railings descends from the highway down the side of the ridge. It leads to a viewing platform directly opposite the plunge pool. The trail also crosses a small concrete bridge over the feeding stream, letting you stand near the edge where the water plunges.

Insider Tips
- Time your visit with rain: Since the falls are rain-fed, they are best viewed between June and October. In the dry winter months, they shrink to a trickle.
- Hold the safety railings: The wet concrete steps leading down to the viewpoint can be slippery, especially during monsoon drizzle.
- Try local tea: Stalls near the entry gate serve hot red tea (sha-saw) and steamed corn, perfect for the cool, misty weather.
