Wei Sawdong Falls
"A three-tiered turquoise cascade hidden in a forested ravine."
Wei Sawdong Falls is a unique three-tiered stepped waterfall located in Sohra, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, at 1,200 meters above sea level. Situated 2 kilometers away from Dainthlen Falls, it is famous for its three distinct amphitheater-like rock terraces and brilliant turquoise-blue plunge pools.
The Stepped Amphitheater of Sohra
Unlike the sheer vertical drop of Nohkalikai, Wei Sawdong cascades down three separate levels of semi-circular sandstone rock shelves. The geological formation creates a natural staircase of waterfalls, with each level emptying into a clear, deep basin. The water's turquoise color is caused by the mineral content of the limestone bedrock and the dense forest shade.
The falls sit deep inside a narrow forested ravine, protected from strong winds. This location keeps the surrounding air highly humid, allowing thick mosses and wild ferns to cover the stone shelves.
The Steep Bamboo Ladder Descent
Accessing Wei Sawdong is physically demanding. The trail descends down a steep, muddy slope into the ravine. To reach the viewpoints, visitors must navigate a series of hand-built wooden and bamboo ladders and rough steps constructed by the local community. The climb down takes about 20 minutes but requires excellent balance and grip.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
- October to April (Dry Season): The water is clear, calm, and has its signature turquoise color. The trail is dry and less slippery.
- June to September (Monsoon): The waterfall becomes a muddy, roaring torrent, and the pools lose their blue color. The bamboo ladders become extremely slippery and hazardous.

Insider Tips
- Wear high-grip shoes: Avoid flip-flops or smooth-soled shoes. The descent is steep, damp, and requires climbing bamboo ladders.
- Combine with Dainthlen Falls: Since Wei Sawdong is only 2 kilometers away from Dainthlen Falls, you can easily visit both in a single morning.
- Capture the middle tier: The second viewing platform offers the best symmetrical view of the three distinct steps of the waterfall and its blue pool.
