Mawlynnong Village is an indigenous Khasi tribal settlement located in Pynursla Block, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, at 520 meters above sea level. Acclaimed as "Asia's Cleanest Village" in 2003 by Discover India, it is celebrated for its community-led hygiene practices, sustainable bamboo infrastructure, and traditional matrilineal society.

The Culture of Cleanliness

Sanitation is not a government program in Mawlynnong; it is a deeply ingrained social norm. From toddlers to village elders, every resident participates in keeping the village clean. Cleanliness activities are scheduled daily, with children sweeping the streets before school.

All waste is collected in conical bamboo baskets (khos) installed at 50-meter intervals along the cobbled lanes. Organic waste is immediately composted to nourish the village's extensive flower gardens, while plastics and non-biodegradables are stored and sent to Shillong for recycling.

The village operates under a zero-litter policy, and according to Discover India's historic 2003 designation, it has served as an ecotourism benchmark for rural sanitation across India.

Matrilineal Khasi Heritage

Mawlynnong is home to about 95 households belonging to the indigenous Khasi community. Like the rest of the Khasi tribe, the village follows a matrilineal social system where lineage, family names, and ancestral properties are inherited by the youngest daughter (khadduh).

Men marry into the bride's household, and children take the mother's clan name. The village is governed by the Dorbar Shnong (traditional village council), led by an elected headman (Rangbah Shnong), which manages local resources, enforces conservation rules, and handles civil matters.

Church of the Epiphany and Sky View

The village landscape features well-manicured lawns, stone-paved paths, and traditional wooden homes surrounded by betel nut trees. Key landmarks include:

  • Church of the Epiphany: A landmark stone cathedral built in 1902 by Welsh Christian missionaries. Its black-stone Gothic design, complete with a tall bell tower and stained glass windows, stands out beautifully against the tropical greenery.
  • The Sky View Tower: An 85-foot-high eco-friendly viewing deck constructed entirely from bamboo and cane tied together. The tower rises above the tree line and offers panoramic views of the flat Sylhet floodplains of neighboring Bangladesh, located just 4 km to the south.

Insider Tips

  • Visit during the monsoon (June–Sept): The village gardens are at their most vibrant, and the surrounding waterfalls are in full flow. The air is exceptionally clean and crisp.
  • Enjoy local Khasi lunch: Try the simple, home-cooked Khasi buffet (featuring red rice, local dal, bamboo shoot stir-fry, and smoked pork or chicken) served in local thatch-roofed restaurants.
  • Support the village economy: Purchase hand-woven bamboo crafts, local spices, or wild forest honey directly from the small stalls inside the village.
