The Vibe & Architecture

Dovipie Inn is Khonoma's pioneer eco-homestay, built with local hand-chiseled stone masonry and warm pine wood paneling that reflects traditional Angami Naga craftsmanship. Perched along a high ridge, the inn overlooks deep mountain valleys where morning mist drifts across nitrogen-fixing Nepalese Alder tree terraces. The property features cozy indoor gathering spaces adorned with traditional woodcarvings, handcrafted burl-wood tables, and an outdoor stone parapet terrace designed for taking in sunset views over the Western Angami hills.

Location & Proximity to Khonoma Sights

Situated near the top entry of Khonoma Green Village, the inn provides immediate walking access to historic clan sectors (khels) and surrounding nature trails:

  • Khonoma Historic Forts & Semoma Khel: 0.4 kilometers (a 5-minute walk up village stone steps).
  • Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS): 2 kilometers (a 10-minute drive or 30-minute uphill walk).
  • Nepalese Alder Agroforestry Paddy Terraces: 0.5 kilometers (a 7-minute walk down terrace trails).
  • Dzuleke Eco-Village: 20 kilometers (a 45-minute mountain drive further west).
  • Kohima War Cemetery & City Center: 20 kilometers (a 50-minute drive east).
  • Kisama Naga Heritage Village: 32 kilometers (a 1.2-hour drive via the Kohima bypass).

The Family & Local Hospitality

Founded and operated by local Angami villagers, Dovipie Inn embodies Khonoma's world-famous community conservation ethos. The hosts welcome travelers with genuine Naga warmth, offering insider guidance on village etiquette, ancestral traditions, and guided butterfly-watching or birding treks into the sanctuary.

Dining & Home-Cooked Specialties (Zievo Coffee Cafe)

The inn features Zievo Coffee Cafe, an on-site dining space serving fresh home-cooked Angami Naga dishes and simple Indian fare:

  • Authentic Angami Naga Meals: Organic red rice, slow-cooked pork with bamboo shoots, fermented soybean (axone), fresh wild greens, and seasonal local herbs.
  • Freshly Brewed Coffee & Teas: Regional highland coffee, ginger tea, and herbal infusions.
  • Special Dining Events: Custom family dinners and evening barbecues arranged at the Nusi Ba wooden terrace pavilion upon request.
  • Note: All meals are prepared fresh to order using organic produce sourced directly from Khonoma's terraced farms. Guests are requested to place dinner orders at least 2 hours in advance.

Village Walks & KNCTS Sanctuary Activities

Dovipie Inn arranges specialized local excursions led by community guides:

  • Guided Village Heritage Walks: Walk through Merhüma, Semoma, and Pitroma khels to view 1879 war fort parapets, bullet-marked wooden gates, and traditional morung dormitories.
  • Birding & Butterfly Watching: Guided morning treks into the 20 sq km KNCTS sanctuary to spot rare Blyth's Tragopans, Golden Sapphire butterflies, and endemic flora.
  • Traditional Angami Craft Demos: Watch local artisans demonstrate cane basket weaving, woodcarving, and traditional organic farming techniques.

Getting There & Navigation

Dovipie Inn is located 20 kilometers west of Kohima. Taxis from Kohima take approximately 45 to 60 minutes along the paved but winding Western Angami road. Drivers can drop passengers near the homestay entrance steps.

The Honest Guide: What to Expect

To ensure a transparent, expectation-aligned experience in a rural tribal village, travelers should note:

  • No Direct Vehicular Access to Guest Rooms: Vehicles must park at the village entry road area; internal movement inside Khonoma requires climbing steep, hand-hewn stone staircases on foot.
  • Cellular & Wi-Fi Connectivity: Wi-Fi is available in the main lounge, but speeds can fluctuate. Jio and Airtel mobile networks offer 4G reception, while BSNL is unreliable.
  • Power Grid & Backup Generator: Village power grid outages occur during rain or wind. Dovipie Inn operates a backup generator between 6:00 PM and 10:30 PM for room lighting and charging; heavy appliances like geysers operate when main power is active.
  • Village Quiet Hours: In keeping with Angami community norms, village life slows down after dark. Quiet hours begin at 10:00 PM.
  • Seasonal Climate: Winter nights (December–February) drop to 4°C–8°C. Rooms feature heavy fleece blankets and hot water bottles; private fireplace heating is exclusive to the Naga Babbler Suite.
