Why Book Your Elephant Safari With Nezo
How Elephant Safari Booking Actually Works in Kaziranga
Here is the practical reality about Kaziranga that most travel aggregators fail to explain: unlike jeep safaris where hundreds of vehicles are in circulation, the number of departmental safari elephants in Kaziranga is strictly capped. Each elephant can carry only 2 to 4 guests (usually 4 in Bagori, and 2 to 3 in Kohora and Burapahar depending on the size of the elephant) across only two or three morning shifts.
Because total daily capacity across all ranges is limited to just a few hundred seats, elephant safaris sell out days or weeks ahead during peak winter months, weekends, and holidays. Travelers who wait until they arrive at their resort frequently find every morning slot booked, or fall prey to spot touts charging 2x to 3x official prices with zero guarantee of permit validity.
When you reserve through Nezo, we secure your seat directly with Assam Forest Department rosters at official government rates. You receive your advance slot confirmation today with a ₹999 per seat deposit. On the evening prior to your ride (between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM), we deliver your exact boarding tower location and on-ground coordinator contact directly to your WhatsApp.
Mobile phone photography is 100% free of charge on elephant safaris. Professional cameras and DSLRs carry standard forest counter fees payable directly on spot.
Kaziranga Elephant Safari Cost & Official Rates (2026–27)
Assam Forest Department Regulated TariffsLooking for the official Kaziranga elephant safari cost? Under Assam Forest Department regulations, the official Kaziranga elephant safari price for Indian nationals is ₹1,799 per seat in Western Range (Bagori) & Burapahar Range (Ghorakati), and ₹1,999 per seat in Central Range (Kohora). For foreign nationals, elephant safaris are permitted strictly in Central Range (Kohora) at ₹3,500 per seat. Unlike street touts or last-minute hotel desks that charge 2x–3x markups during peak season, every safari reserved through Nezo follows official government rate schedules with guaranteed seat allocations and certified departmental mahouts. Secure your seats today with an advance deposit of ₹999 per seat.

Kaziranga Elephant Safari Timings & Daily Shifts (2026–27)
3 Morning Dawn Shifts DailyUnlike Jeep Safaris that run in both morning and afternoon shifts, Elephant Safaris in Kaziranga operate exclusively in the morning across three 1-hour shifts. After 8:30 AM, elephants are bathed, fed, and released to graze in forest pastures for animal welfare. Mandatory reporting at the range gate is strictly 30 minutes before your safari start time to verify ID documents and mount the wooden howdah safely.
05:30 AM – 06:30 AM
Best for golden sunrise light, thick morning fog, and unhurried rhino encounters before the sun warms up.
06:30 AM – 07:30 AM
Clearer light as mist lifts, highly active grazing rhinos and wild deer herds across waterholes.
07:30 AM – 08:30 AM
Warmer temperatures, crisp visibility, excellent photography conditions as grassland birds awaken.
Kaziranga Elephant Safari Ranges & Zones Guide (2026–27)
3 Regulated Forest RangesWhile Kaziranga National Park encompasses 11 administrative forest beats, Elephant Safaris are operated exclusively in three designated ranges: Western Range (Bagori), Central Range (Kohora), and Burapahar Range (Ghorakati). Each range offers distinct terrain, elephant howdah capacities, and sighting advantages.

Western Range (Bagori)
Bagori Range Office (Donga Riding Point) • 13 km from Kohora
Bagori is the undisputed king of rhino sightings. Its vast alluvial floodplains feature short water hyacinth marshes where rhinos gather in large numbers at dawn. Elephant capacity is 2 to 4 guests per elephant (usually 4).

Central Range (Kohora)
Kohora Range Office (Mihimukh Tower) • Central Hub (Kohora)
Starting from the Mihimukh riding tower, Central Range offers scenic wetland vistas, Donga Beel, and swamp deer habitats. Capacity is 2 to 3 guests per elephant depending on the elephant’s size. Crucially, Central Range is the only range where foreign nationals are permitted for elephant safaris.

Burapahar Range (Ghorakati)
Ghorakati Gate • 30 km from Kohora
Situated where the Karbi Anglong hills meet the Brahmaputra plains. Burapahar offers an unhurried, crowd-free safari experience through mixed woodland and grassland trails. Capacity is 2 to 3 guests per elephant depending on the elephant’s size.
Reaching the Safari Starting Point (Pre-Dawn Safety Notice)
Guests must reach the designated elephant riding point (Mihimukh Tower in Kohora, Donga Point in Bagori, or Ghorakati in Burapahar) with their own vehicle or hired taxi.
Walking into the park boundary in pre-dawn darkness is strictly prohibited: For wildlife safety, visitors are not allowed to walk on foot to the boarding towers before sunrise, as wild rhinos, buffaloes, and elephants frequently forage near road corridors at night.

Elephant Safari Seasons & Opening Dates
Official Season: 1 Nov to 30 AprilIn Kaziranga National Park, elephant safaris operate exclusively during the 6-month dry season from 1 November to 30 April each year. Unlike jeep safaris which begin in October, elephant safaris remain completely closed throughout October while post-monsoon marshlands dry out and forest veterinarians complete health and equipment inspections. The entire park remains closed from June through September due to annual Brahmaputra monsoon floods.
Why do elephant safaris close on April 30? By late April, early summer thunderstorms and pre-monsoon showers make tall grassland tracks slippery and waterlogged. For the welfare and rest of the departmental elephants and their mahouts, elephant safaris conclude on April 30, even if jeep safaris continue running through May. In exceptional years with delayed rains, the park authority may temporarily extend rides by a few days up to May 10 (as occurred in the 2023–24 season), but operations strictly depend on weather and trail safety.
| Months | Park & Trail Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 01 – Oct 31 | Elephant safaris are completely closed throughout October. While jeep trails open partially, elephant riding paths remain waterlogged after monsoon floods. Forest authorities conduct annual mahout and elephant fitness checks. | Closed (Trail Setup) |
| Nov 01 – Nov 30 | Elephant safari season officially opens on November 1 across Bagori, Kohora, and Burapahar ranges. Early winter air brings morning mist, pleasant weather, and lush green grasslands. | Season Opens (Nov 1) |
| Dec 01 – Feb 28 | Peak winter season. Crisp sunrise temperatures (10°C–15°C) and thick morning fog. Rhinos, wild buffaloes, and hog deer forage actively in open grassland clearings. Highest demand across all dawn shifts. | Peak Season |
| Mar 01 – Apr 30 | Forest department conducts annual controlled burning of tall elephant grass, opening expansive panoramic visibility across the plains. Excellent wildlife sightings around shrinking waterholes before operations wrap up on April 30. | Best Visibility |
| May 01 – May 31 | Elephant safaris are officially closed starting May 1 for elephant welfare and pre-monsoon rains. (Note: in exceptional dry seasons, authorities may temporarily grant a brief extension up to May 10, but rides routinely stop April 30). | Closed for Season |
| Jun 01 – Sep 30 | Annual Brahmaputra monsoon floods submerge up to 70% of Kaziranga’s grasslands. The entire national park is shut for conservation, and animals seek refuge in the southern Karbi Anglong hills. | Park Closed (Monsoon) |

Elephant Safari Guidelines & Forest Code of Conduct
Strict Assam Forest ProtocolKaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with strict wildlife protection laws. Because elephant safaris bring you within close proximity to wild rhinos and other large mammals, adhering to the Forest Department’s code of conduct is mandatory for the safety of visitors, mahouts, and wildlife.
1. Entry & ID Verification
Entry is permitted only with verified Forest Department permits. Every guest must carry an original government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License) for gate verification.
2. Pre-Dawn Transport & Riding Point Safety
Guests must reach the elephant riding point via vehicle. Walking into the forest boundary or riding point on foot in pre-dawn darkness is strictly prohibited by forest rules for visitor safety.
3. Mahout & Elephant Respect
Never shout, feed, or touch the elephant. Always listen to the certified mahout driving the elephant, remain seated inside the wooden howdah, and hold onto the safety handrails at all times.
4. Silence Near Wildlife & Sighting Decorum
Maintain complete silence when near one-horned rhinos, elephant herds, and wild buffaloes. No flash photography or sudden movements. Do not instruct your mahout to corner or disturb animals.
5. Zero Plastic & Earth-Toned Clothing
Single-use plastics and disposable bottles are banned (reusable metal flasks permitted). Wear comfortable, sober-colored clothing (khaki, olive green, earthy tones). Carry a warm layer in winter.
Dawn Elephant Safari + Afternoon Jeep Safari: The Full Experience
The gold standard way to experience Kaziranga is combining both safaris on the same day. Start with an early Dawn Elephant Safari (5:30 AM or 6:30 AM) in Bagori or Kohora to get within feet of rhinos grazing in tall elephant grass. Then, return to your resort for breakfast and take an afternoon 4x4 Jeep Safari (1:30 PM – 5:00 PM) covering 20–25 km across scenic wetlands, Sohola Beel, and deep forest tracks until sunset.
As Kaziranga locals, we strongly suggest doing both for maximum sighting diversity and photographic opportunities.
