Inner Line Permit (ILP) Required for Tawang
All domestic Indian citizens residing outside the state must obtain an approved Inner Line Permit (ILP) prior to entering Tawang. Foreign travelers require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or local registration.
Every Nezo tour package includes seamless online permit documentation and pre-cleared checkpost entry passes.
Due to sensitive international frontiers along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), entry to Tawang is regulated by strict government permits:
- Inner Line Permit (ILP) — Domestic Indian Tourists: Mandatory for all non-resident Indian citizens under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873. Applied online via eilp.arunachal.gov.in or arunachalilp.com. Fee: ₹300 for up to 3 days, ₹500 for beyond 3 days up to 14 days (processed in 24–48 hours).
- Protected Area Permit (PAP) — Foreign Nationals: Required for all foreign passport holders under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958. Foreign tourists must travel in a minimum group of 2 persons through a registered tour operator (fee: US$ 50 per person; valid for 30 days).
- Bum La Pass Special Clearances: A two-tier permit obtained in Tawang town through the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and counter-signed at the Indian Army Brigade Headquarters. Non-local vehicles are restricted; local Tawang 4x4 SUVs are mandatory. Note: Foreign nationals are strictly barred from Bum La Pass due to military regulations.
