Cultural celebrations in Khonoma are anchored in centuries-old Angami Naga agrarian traditions, ancestral spiritual cleansing rites, and eco-conservation milestones.
Sekrenyi (Phousanyi) Festival
February (25th of the Angami month of Kezei)
The most sacred and joyous festival of the Angami tribe. Spanning 10 to 14 days, Sekrenyi is an ancient purification ritual designed to cleanse the body, soul, and village from past misfortunes and renew spiritual harmony. Rituals begin before dawn when men sanctify village water wells and weapons, followed by community bridge repairs, traditional warrior choral singing, and feasting around household woodfire hearths in Khonoma.
Hornbill Festival (Satellite Cultural Hub)
December 1 – 10 annually
Located just 32 km from Kisama Naga Heritage Village, Khonoma serves as the premier tranquil heritage haven during the world-famous Hornbill Festival. Visitors attend high-energy tribal dances and music at Kisama by day and retreat to the peaceful stone-paved lanes and cozy hearth hospitality of Khonoma by evening.
Khonoma Conservation & Green Village Anniversary
December (Annual commemoration)
Celebrating the historic 1998 village resolution that founded the KNCTS sanctuary and banned commercial logging and wildlife hunting, this community gathering brings together village elders, youth conservation guards, and visitors to review forest biodiversity and honor ecological stewardship.
